Barry Ray Year: 1920 Villages: SlaughamSlaugham Park drive
The private drive runs from the white gates in Slaugham to those on the slipway leading to the A23 in Handcross. Slaugham Park house is about halfway. Before the construction of the A23 bypass in Handcross, the northern part of the drive continued somewhat further and met the Horsham Road next to All Saints church where the bridge now stands. In the first few years of my life in the early 1940s I was a regular commuter on the route from Slaugham to the major shops of Handcross, firstly in a pram and then in a pushchair. I can remember little of those trips except for the day when my aunt was pushing me up the drive and quite near the top a bomb had come down on the road destroying about two-thirds of the road on the eastern side. There was just enough road on the left for us to continue our journey. The estate workers filled in the hole very quickly.
