Video of Handcross Hill - 21st Century versionThere have been several attempts to make Handcross Hill safer following the dreadful Vanguard bus accident of 1906 in which 10 travellers lost their lives and 26 were injured.
The most recent improvements commenced in 2011 and were both extensive and ambitious. Over several months the work continued with the added problem that traffic was permitted to pass through in both directions, albeit with a 40mph speed limit.
The first visible work was to fell and remove hundreds of trees lining the new carriageways and this was performed by a large number of tree workers brandishing chainsaws.
The video was produced by David Pearce, although he vehemently denies singing the accompanying song “Woodman, spare that tree”.
