R.I.P. Mrs Effie Mary Wellington (1935-2019) This photograph has been received from Naomi Enrico (née Wellington) with the sad news that her mother, Effie Wellington (née Tomsett) passed away on 6th January 2019. She is on the left of the picture taken on an outing from Handcross to Weymouth in 1954.
Effie’s parents lived on the Hyde estate and were George Tomsett, who worked on the estate, and Ruby Tomsett (née Donald). When Effie was a teenager she became acquainted with a certain William Wellington who had driven his traction engine all the way from the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire to carry out a contract to pull dredger buckets through the Hyde lakes. Having completed the work he returned to the Forest of Dean, but before he left he told Effie that when she was a few years older he would return and marry her. The years slipped by, but he kept his promise and they married in 1957. Effie was just 22-years-old.

I am grateful to Linda Knight (née Brown) for identifying the lady on the right as her grandfather’s second wife, Olive Doggett (née Dence). Her grandfather was William “Bill” Doggett who worked as head gardener on the Hyde estate. Olive had arrived to work on the Hyde estate as a member of the Women;s Land Army. William and Olive married at Lower Beeding church in 1943.
Olive also features in the “Large Version” and the “Document” in picture #2062.
