St Mary's church at Slaugham (6 of 6)

Here are four newsworthy items associated with St Mary’s Church in Slaugham.
The Large Version shows a newspaper report of the funeral of business magnate, Sir John Denison-Pender, G.B.E., K.C.M.G. who lived a few years earlier at Slaugham Place.
The funeral was unusual for two reasons. Firstly, there was a one-minute stoppage throughout the world-wide network of the Eastern Associated Telegraph Company for which Sir John was Chairman to allow the staff on duty to stand in silence during the committal ceremony. Secondly, during the carrying of the coffin to the graveside the choir led the procession singing “Onward Christian Soldiers”.
Select Open Document to view three more items. The first records the funeral of Major Gen Sir Stuart Beatson K.C.B., K.C.V.C. who lived at what is now known as Lower Ashfold. Again, this funeral had two unusual aspects. Firstly, the funeral and burial took place on the same day that the deceased died, and, secondly, the burial took place at 8.00pm with the mourners dressed in black and standing around the grave in the moonlight. Not for the faint-hearted, methinks.
The next item announced that Rev. Aylmer Cameron was about to leave Slaugham for a smaller parish.
Lastly, it was reported that a plaque had been fixed to the church organ in memory of the organist for 25 years, Mr Herbert Weller, who had passed away one year earlier.
