St Mark's church at Staplefield (1 of 5)This is the first in a series of five pictures relating to Staplefield church and its history.
The picture shows the interior of St Mark’s with the elaborate cover on the font in its raised position Perhaps a baptism was about to take place. The cover was given to the church by the Misses Daphne and Phyllis “Mollie” Dengate in memory of their parents, Rev. William Dengate and Mrs Agnes Dengate..
It is mentioned in a booklet on the history of the church by Rev W. A. Dengate that there was once a gallery, but in August 1876 it was removed by order of the Vestry. No reasons were given.
