Blacksmith, Warninglid

The blacksmith pauses for a photograph outside the smithy in The Street. The circular sign on the wall says Automobile Association, Cowfold 4, Warninglid, Handcross 3, London 37¼, Safety First. I presume a hundred years ago it was deemed important to add the extra 440 yards to a trip to London. The smith stands on the 5ft tyring ring used for fitting the metal tyre ring around a wooden cartwheel. I wonder if the ring is still under the front garden of the new house built on the site as I note that a local salvage firm currently has one for sale for £1350 plus VAT! The Large Version shows a close-up of the blacksmith carrying a couple of his tools.
