Staplefield pond

About seven children can be seen playing on the Common, although some are rather blurred as they were running during a timed exposure by the photographer. Nowadays, a health and safety official would have a seizure seeing these children playing near the pond, particularly without any warning signs or lifebuoys.

Staplefield Pond
I attended Staplefield School from the age of 5 years until aged 12, when I left to go to Cuckfield County Primary School.
The pond played a large part in our school life. Our nature studies were conducted around the pond, collecting frog spawn and watching the water birds building their nests. In the winter when the pond froze over, sliding and skating was the order of the day.
Things have certainly changed over the years.
