The Victory, Staplefield

Vic and Lesley Newnham ran The Victory at Staplefield from 1954 to 1989; the pub being a Watney house. Vic was involved in many of the social activities of the village, in particular the cricket club and annual quoits match. The quoits matches were played on the original quoits beds situated on the common land outside the pub every Boxing Day. The matches were played between the cricket clubs of Staplefield and Warninglid from about 1960, following an interval of about 50 years since last played there. However, the matches have not been played since about 1985. The inside of this promotional leaflet can be found on picture #327.
