Albert Quick, High Street, Handcross

The newsagents shop was built on the site of two terraced cottages and Mr Staplehurst must have been one of the first proprietors. Next door, Mr A. Quick offers cycle repairs, and “suits to measure”. In November 1925 Alfred Quick bought the business at the old garage for his son, Archie, who joined the two blacksmiths/wheelwrights already working there. A trade directory of 1927 has an entry for “Alfred W. Quick, High Street. Cycle works, boot-maker and hairdresser”. It seems to me most likely, therefore, that the proprietor of the shop in the picture is Mr Alfred Quick, and not his son.
