Tilgate sawmill

The notes to this tinted photograph tell us that it depicts wood sawing in Tilgate Forest. A traction engine has been brought in to power the saw bench and sawn planks can be seen at bottom left and right. No doubt the two horses were used to haul the logs from the forest to the saw bench and also transport the finished products out of the forest. I wonder what these foresters would make of the timber harvesters used today!
