Batchelors Buildings, High Street, Handcross

From the left are a terraced row of four cottages known as Batchelors Buildings ending with the shop, No. 1, partially obscured by the horse and cart. The Tithe Map of 1842 describes them as "Cottage with 4 tenements. Owned by John Pierce. Occupied by:- George Peskett, James Stoner, Edward King, and Thomas Smith". Click on Large Version for a close up of the horse and cart with a young girl sitting on the driver's seat, and a long whip can be seen in its holder sticking in the air. A young lady is posing in the doorway of No. 2, but I am not confident that the motives of the heavily-bearded admirer lurking behind the crates are entirely honourable.
