Batchelors Buildings sign

Interestingly, the sign on the outside of the building is inscribed "Batchelors Bueldings 1809". No doubt it will remain a mystery as to whether the original intention was to use this unusual spelling of "buildings", or whether it was an error by the stonemason. There is no mention of "buelding" in the OED, but it is included as a 17th century alternative to "building" in the "Dictionary of the Scots Language"!
