Handcross Hill Road Improvements

In the autumn of 2011 the road widening and improvements of the notorious Handcross Hill started and are due to be completed in the autumn of 2014. In October 2011 the work commenced with the felling and clearing of all trees from top to bottom.
This series of five photographs illustrates the progress as at the end of August 2012 and the difficulties in keeping two lanes open in each direction while the work continues.
These two pictures, taken near the top of the hill looking southwards, show the temporary widening of the southbound carriageway to carry two lanes of traffic in each direction to enable the rebuilding of the northbound carriageway.
