Handcross Hill Slaugham Exit

One contentious decision has been to close the Slaugham/Staplefield exit at the bottom of the hill permanently. The slip road will become simply an extension to the new access road to East Park house and farm. Residents of the two villages affected will be obliged to negotiate minor roads to access the A23 at either Handcross or Warninglid, resulting in extra mileage on minor roads. The bridge on the left of the photograph was constructed before WWII but was boarded up at either end thereby providing a storage area for road making materials. It was eventually opened up as a road when the Handcross by-pass was completed after the war.

Comments:
Thank you, David, for mentioning the A23 exit slip road and its foolhardy removal. The Highways Agency will reduce the width of lanes for the complete length of the the undulating and hilly project and will sqeeze the roads over the bridges by removing the parapets. There is a seven metre gap between the two bridges which could have been utilised. The proven existing safe exit slip roads are vital for easy access of emergency and delivery vehicles to the surrounding area. I have not used the Slaugham access road to the A23 for years as it is simple to join elsewhere. We should have had these beautiful, longest-in-construction (1937-1965) bridges in Sussex "listed".
A few years ago I met a man at Rodmell who in 1939 was driving an East Sussex County Council Foden steam wagon from Newhaven docks with the reinforcing iron for the second Slaugham bridge. War being declared, he had to turn around at Lewes and take it all back to Newhaven.
