Girl Guide headquarters in Handcross

The Brownies Pack and Girl Guide Company were formed by Miss Cyllene Reed in about 1920 and one of the first to join up was Winifred Faulkner, pictured here. She went on to marry Jack Greenfield in 1932 and they were both very active in village life for many decades to come. The Guide headquarters was situated in the narrow driveway between Les Moore’s Dairy and Lynwood next door.

Winifred's daughter, Joy Greenfield, was a good friend of mine many years ago in 1959. We both left home at 16 and started our nurse training as cadet nurses at Redhill General Hospital, as it was known as then.

I was a member of the Handcross Girl Guides when Miss Hilary Preston was the Guide leader in the late 1940s. I remember marching to Slaugham for church parade.
