German field gun at Old White Horse, Slaugham

Published by “David Tulley, Post Office, Handcross”, this postcard shows the final days of the Old White Horse before it was demolished. The present-day flagpole is located in the front graveyard, but with the pub still standing the earlier one was placed outside the church grounds on the common land.
On the right of the picture stands the German field gun which was placed there soon after the end of the Great War. It was given to the village by the Sussex Regiment who had a number of guns for disposal. Mr Boyd, who was Rector then, thought it would be nice to have a gun outside the church.
On one occasion it had been pushed down the hill with the intention of being run into the pond but it never got there. In 1929, as the gun was in a poor state of repair, the Rector and churchwardens gave their authority to have it removed.
The Large Version shows the field gun in situ.

Comments:
This picture answers my question I have just sent you in an email! Sorry! (See picture #468).
I now realise just where the Old White Horse was; right on top of the church.
Was the Chequers built after this?

The Chequers was built in the mid-19th century to replace an old 17th century building which included an old shop (picture #200).
The new building was firstly a shop (picture #201), and then converted to the Chequers pub you visited today.
