Car smashed into Staplefield bus shelter

The bus shelter on Staplefield Common has received a direct hit from a Vauxhall Victor 101 (1964-67). No one was seriously injured, but Vic in the Victory close-by had a funny turn! The “Bullnose” Bedford ambulance has the East Sussex coat of arms on the door indicating that it was before the boundary changes of 1st April 1974, when much of Mid-Sussex was transferred from East Sussex to West Sussex.
The year of the incident is estimated. Please, can anyone supply additional or more accurate information?

We like the photo of the crashed Vauxhall Victor. It seems funny that a Victor should crash in the vicinity of Vic at the Victory. I wonder if it was being driven by a vicar.

As a retired Sussex Ambulance Service paramedic, I have been collecting photographs and other material regarding Sussex ambulance and first aid services. This has culminated into the formation of the Sussex Ambulance Heritage Project, and the self-publishing of a book on the services in West Sussex.
I now intend to do the same for East Sussex which will include this picture, although, of course, the village is now located in West Sussex.
The ambulance shown is a Bedford J1 with bodywork by Herbert Lomas Ltd, introduced in the 1960s and in common use in East Sussex in the 1970s. I am unable to tell which Ambulance station the vehicle came from, but the two nearest would have been Haywards Heath and East Grinstead. I will show the photograph to my ex East Sussex ambulance colleagues and see if they can add any further details.
