Handcross Park West Lodge

The matching pointed finial atop the pillar on the extreme right is shown covered in some sort of climbing plant. However, it is noted that this finial is now missing, but under what circumstances I do not know.

We lived in the house at the time the finial was lost in the early 1990s.
An original Volkswagen Beetle was driving along what was the A23 at that time when it lost an entire wheel, which bounced and knocked the finial off!

My grandfather, Alfred Backshall, and grandmother, Rose Backshall, lived at West Lodge from before the last war until they moved to The Twitten in West Green, Crawley in about 1970, if l remember correctly.
I lived there with my mother Kathleen Backshall, and father, Alfred Thomas Backshall, when l was born in Cuckfield in Oct 1949 until we moved to West Street, Crawley in 1952.
I remember the large chicken run at the back, where Nan had lots of bantams.
