The Old Smithy, Warninglid

This was photographed in the summer of 1985.
I bought the Old Smithy, the former Warninglid village Post Office, during the previous year, after the Yarrows had failed to find a buyer for the shop.
This was the conversion work of the shop to a sitting-room. The chimney liners for a new fireplace can be seen in the foreground.

When I bought it, there was still an air raid siren in the eaves cupboard. It was the Post Office's role to operate it in the event of nuclear attack. Brilliant.
I was asked if I'd carry on being responsible for it, but I declined as I thought I would have better ways of spending my last few minutes.

We took on the role of defending the village in the event of war!
We had the siren in the shed and the radio connection to the Sussex Police under our stair cupboard for many years at Rose Cottage on the crossroads in Warninglid.

Thanks Rita & Peter. For years I thought our whole village was left undefended!
