Bonfire night in Slaugham

An early Slaugham Village Society was set up in the 1970s by Tom Wilson, Brig. Bobbie Loder, and others. The aim of the society was to be prepared for any real or imagined threat to the peace of the village community following the initial trickle of building development taking place in nearby villages.
Surplus annual contributions from the members were ploughed into a Bonfire Night firework display for about 6 or 7 years.
The photograph shows children and others gathering to take the well-stuffed Guy Fawkes on a torchlight parade to the bonfire at the old cricket field, just to the south of the old rectory.
This was probably the last time that the tiny cricket pavilion was ever used; this time for hot and cold refreshments.

I can see Teresa and Catherine Shopland, Rachel Squires, myself (Lena Schriever, née Botting), Michelle Talman, Angela Talman (bell bottom trousers were all the rage back then), Elizabeth Shopland, my brother Mark Botting is there in the background.
I think I see Carl Evans, I think that's Anthony Shopland on the right, or it might be Jimmy Shopland and Anthony might be pushing the Guy Fawkes with Michelle. Of course, there is Granny Shopland too.
This was the one and only year, that I remember, that we had these wonderful torches and paraded down to the field behind the church. Every year, though, we ate oxtail soup, sausages in a bun and listened to Brigadier Bobby Loder go "oooohhh...aaaahhhh" during the fireworks display.
I often tell my American friends how the Brits every year burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes at the stake and have fireworks and of course they ask "Why". "The famous gun-powder plot", I tell them, but they are still none the wiser.....
I have some wonderful memories growing up in Slaugham where the village raised us kids.
