Fire at Red Lion, Handcross

In the early hours of 7th September, 1978, the 450-year-old Red Lion caught fire and was severely damaged. Dramatic photographs appeared in many of the Sussex papers and the Evening Argus covered the incident on its front page shown above.
I received a telephone from my mother in the middle of the night and quickly dressed and hurried to the scene. Several fire engines were in attendance and about a dozen residents had gathered on the pavement opposite.
