Beer bottle survived the Red Lion fire

This shows a victim of the fire at the Red Lion rescued from the charred remains in the bar area by kind permission of the joint licensee, Mr Bill Farleigh. The strong ale was brewed by Watneys at their Mortlake brewery and called St George. It was specially brewed for St George’s Taverns, who owned the Red Lion at that time. It has certainly suffered from some smoke damage, but I regret that the fierce heat would have made the contents undrinkable.

That beer was ok, very mellow.
They stashed all the so-called burnt stock at the rear of the Red Lion.
The bus stop was handy because the rim of the adjacent BT green communications box made a good bottle opener!

Yep, I remember those days.
Mr.Snelling would chase us kids away from the burnt stock...

Mr Snelling, bless!
Alongside his shop was a fine wire black fence with a swing gate. Being always well dressed and tall he used to scissor-jump over the fence to his front door; the fence being about three feet high.
He did make me smile and, as a kid, I hoped he wouldn't make it, but every time with his own smile and grin he did. Every time!

Opposite Mr Snelling's fence, next to the building which is now Christian's, on the roadside next to the pavement was a stone fishpond complete with goldfish. I kind of remember it had a small wooden windmill in the early 1970s and 1980s.
It's the small things you miss about a village; only through the eyes and memories of a schoolchild from Handcross!
