Lily Warren and Eveline Warren at Chailey Heritage

Colonel John Raymond Warren married Eveline Bosanquet in 1926 and they moved into the Hyde in 1927, having been delayed by a year following a serious fire which damaged part of the house. Col. Warren’s parents spent long periods staying at Handcross Park at the invitation of Col. Warren’s batchelor uncle and this picture shows his mother, Mrs Lily Warren, at Chailey Heritage, a charitable special school for children with complex needs, to which Mrs Warren gave enormous support. This included the Lily Warren Nurses’ Home being part of the Chailey Heritage Marine Hospital on the Sussex coast.
The charm of this photograph for me is the different fashion displayed by Mrs Lily Warren with the large hat and dress dating back to the style of the previous century, compared to her daughter-in-law, Mrs Eveline Warren, standing in the doorway with her bonnet and dress from clearly a more modern era.
