The picture was taken on Sunday, July 29th 1956, and shows four trees laying across the Brighton Road at Pease Pottage being cleared by (from L to R) Percy Bailey, Mr Smith (Pease Pottage Garage), Jack Bailey, and PC Siggs.
A severe storm with devastating winds had hit the southern counties, and led one meteorologist to colourfully suggest that it was if the jet stream has descended to the Earth's surface,
