Handcross Park ablaze

On Thursday 23rd May 1935, tragedy struck when the mansion of Handcross Park was totally destroyed by a fire fanned by a high wind. This dramatic aerial photograph clearly demonstrates the hopeless task facing the fire crews.
Their job in saving the mansion was not made any easier by an incident on the way to the fire as can be seen in the Large Version.
