Miss Fortune Smith marries

Miss Fortune Smith, daughter of Capt. and Mrs E. C. Eric Smith of Lower Ashfold, married the Earl of Euston, eldest son of the Duke of Grafton on 12th October 1946 in Slaugham church.
There was obviously a large attendance as it was reported that police officers under the direction of a Superintendant, and AA Patrols supervised the traffic arrangements.
They had five children, and the third child, Lady Virginia Fitzroy, was greatly honoured to have the Queen as godmother. A newspaper cutting of this event in 1954 can be viewed as a Large Version.
Fortune, now with the magnificent title of Her Grace The Dowager Duchess of Grafton given to her by the Queen in 2011 under the Royal Family Order, will be 93 years old on 24th February 2013. She was widowed in 2011.

The Order of Service for Ann Fortune Smith's marriage to Hugh Fitzroy, Earl of Euston, can be viewed on the Open Document link above.
He succeeded as Duke of Grafton, and Ann, after previous royal service, became Mistress of the Robes to the Queen in 1967; the most senior appointment.
It seems that at birth Miss Smith became the heiress to a large sum of money and this fortuitous event was celebrated by naming the child "Fortune".

Fortune's brother was Sir John Smith MP (1923-2007) who had five children, one of whom was Serena Smith who became the second wife of Nicholas Soames MP on 21st December 1993. They now live at Bells Farm, Slaugham. The newspaper cutting relating to their wedding announcement has been added to the end of the Document referred to above.
The latest news, as at November 2015 from John Skinner, is that Fortune is "still going strong" in Euston Hall, Suffolk at the age of 95.

It appears that "Miss Fortune" by birth was anything but.
