Harrods estate agency were commissioned to sell Stanbridges in 1963. Note that they have dated the property at circa 1385. The listed buildings description is not so precise and suggests a date of “17th century or earlier”.

So, my parents moved in and, as my father worked for the London “Gas, Light and Coke Company”, had calor gas lighting installed and a primitive boiler/hot water system. He continued to work in London throughout the war and my mother learned farming; although hard work, it probably was the making of her because up to then she had simply been a lady of leisure. In fact, for a while, whilst they lived in Reigate they had a maid from, of all places, Switzerland! She reared Jersey cows, made delicious cheeses which she sold to RAF bases, chickens, vegetables, fruit –the works. She was helped from about 1943 to 1950 by an Italian POW, Giovanni Pizzolitte, who, much to my mother’s chagrin, left to marry a girl called Doreen who lodged at the Jolly Tanners.
