Rose Cottage, Staplefield

It seems from this photograph of the south-facing aspect of Rose Cottage in Staplefield that it had a grey pebbledash finish on the exterior walls in contrast to today’s striking black and white appearance.
Maps of 1874 and 1913 show that access to the property was provided from the Cuckfield Road with a circular drive outside the front door as seen in the photograph. Today, access is from Rose Cottage Lane, a much safer option.
The two windows on the ground floor have now been replaced by imposing bay windows with tiled roofs.
