Vanguard accident - Policeman

A policeman has appeared at the scene of the Vanguard bus accident, but there seems to be little to do at this stage as the dead and injured would have already been taken to the Red Lion in Handcross. No doubt they are awaiting the arrival of the traction engine to pull the bus back onto the road.
Police Sergeant Huntley, who is stationed at Staplefield, reported as follows “I was home at about a quarter past eleven when someone ran to my home with news of the accident. I jumped on my bicycle and rode as quickly as possible to the spot. When I arrived several of the injured were lying by the side of the road holding their heads and groaning. One man in the glade by the roadside had one leg cut completely off. One or two others were dying. There were three dead bodies all lying in a lump. Dr. Sidney Matthews of Crawley had just arrived in his motorcar and at once dealt with the injured. A lot of labourers came from an adjoining brickyard and, under the doctor’s instruction, they did what they could to lift the injured into carts and take them to the Red Lion Hotel.”
