Vanguard accident - Upper deck wrecked

It was a very pleasant day and most of the passengers on the ill-fated Vanguard bus were sitting upstairs making it very unstable. Despite desperate efforts by the driver the bus hit an oak tree and a lower branch sliced off the top deck ejecting the passengers in all directions. All of the ten dead were sitting on the top deck.
The picture shows the upstairs portion of the bus which was not much more than a pile of firewood after the crash. The remains of the wooden seats were used to carry the dead and injured back up the hill to a temporary morgue and hospital at the Red Lion.
