Vanguard accident - Oak tree damage

The oak tree was badly scarred near the base and was covered in ivy to a great height. The impact with the tree severed the upper deck from the lower part throwing the occupants many yards into the wood and killing six instantly.
Two of the dead were thrown into the branches of the tree and were left hanging in the tree for some time due to the considerable difficulty in removing the bodies. One hung upside down suspended by a foot which was so firmly wedged between the branches that the boot had to be taken off before the body could be removed. The lower part of the bus bounced back into the road and continued for several more yards before coming to a halt overhanging a steep drop.
A local shopkeeper was one of the first on the scene and nearly fainted at the sight of “a human leg dangling torn from its sockets, and the leaves and tree trucks and undergrowth were splattered with blood and human remains.”
