Slaugham 2010 Year Book
I am the great-grandson of former resident, George Stevens. I had always understood that he and his family occupied the whole, but I will look into this.
I have a photograph of George Stevens and his three sons, Charles, Harry and William, taken circa late 1914 or early 1915. Charles and William are in uniform, Harry was a carpenter making wooden frames for military aeroplanes in Surrey.
Charles was killed in June 1918, and William survived the war, only to die in the Spanish flu epidemic of November 1918. They are both commemorated in the Church.
I will try to get this picture uploaded

I have just dug out papers relating to George Stevens' occupation of the old workhouse. In fact he purchased both cottages that formed the property on 12 November 1919. He lived there until his death in 1936.
The cottages were then auctioned on behalf of his estate by Wood, Son and Gardner of Crawley. I have a copy of the auction particulars in front of me as I write.
George, and then Harry Stevens had a large wooden carpenter's shop on what is now the front garden of the house. It was used for coffin making amongst many other things.
