Sir Edmund Loder's wedding

Opposite the site of the present post office stands another column of foliage. Until 1957 the eastern side of the High Street was in the Cuckfield Rural Parish and no doubt the divided village was the primary, but unknown, cause why most of the houses were situated on the one side. In 1876 the only buildings located on the east side were the Dame's School and shop in the foreground, Chodds farmhouse in the misty distance, and Tolgate Cottage shortly before Balcombe Lane.
