The Old School, Slaugham

The Old School was built on common land around 1840 and was one of the National Schools, funded by public subscription.
Originally it was a room 40ft by 20ft with a single storey house attached at the eastern end. After Mr Wenham left in about 1870 another storey was added, and in about 1904 twenty feet was added to the schoolroom to provide enough space for a miniature rifle range.
For more history and a modern photograph of the building see picture #804 and picture #805.
In 1878 the newly-built schools at Handcross and Warninglid opened and the Slaugham school closed. Mr James Edwards, the much-respected headmaster of Slaugham school, became the headmaster at Handcross. His funeral took place at Slaugham church and more details can been viewed at picture #576.

Comments:
This old school is close to the Furnace Pond but I'm not sure. Maybe someone knows...

Reply by Barry Ray :- Quite right, Lena, it is just 150 yards from the Furnace Pond on the road to the village.

My father worked on the refurbishment in the late sixties.
One of his jobs was to build the stone wall around the front garden, although imposing now, it was originally three feet taller! Once completed the owners realised that they had lost any views from the front of the house, so down it came!
As Dad would have said,"It all makes work for the working man to do".

According to the 1841 Census, William Still was the schoolmaster, 4th GGF.
